The port may be in use by another device or another application, such as fax software or an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Try the following:

Please exit the other program or restart Windows to free the port. |

If that doesn't work, reboot your computer to free the port -- turn your computer off, wait a minute, then turn it back on. Now try to re-connect. |

If that doesn't work, and you feel confident enough to locate and modify init strings in your computer, add the init string atz to your modem and reboot your computer. |

If that doesn't work, remove the atz init string and refer to a qualified technician. |

If the problem persists, contact a qualified technician. |
